INTERVIEW2022.2.24

Interview with Ryoma WATANABE

Q: How was it to look back on the whole after finishing the opening game?
A, in the early stages, I think everyone had the impression that it was a bit chaotic, but for me, it was within expectations. Honestly, there is no part that I need to reflect on regarding that. We were able to gradually play our football after the period when things didn't go well, and I don't think there was any reason to be pessimistic about the overall game from the first half to the second half.

Q, Did you feel that it was necessary to endure the first 15 minutes not going well as expected?
A, at first I thought it would definitely not go well. Based on my experience, I think it's normal for the first match of playing a new style of soccer to not go well in the initial period. Since we are doing something new this season, I think it's natural that it won't go well.

Q: In communicating within the team, which aspect, offense or defense, was the focus of improvement?
A, I had more opportunities in defense. Since the defense wasn't going well, I was conscious of making improvements in that area.

Q: It seemed like the rhythm improved from the time when the ball was passed around in the backline. Did you feel a sense of accomplishment in that aspect?
A, if we talk about the tempo and speed that we are aiming for... Can we say that we have reached the point of creating a rhythm... The quality we truly want is further ahead, but if we judge it at this point, I think we were able to do it smoothly.

Q, I think I have gained a sense of confidence in playing as a side back even in practice matches.
A, there are some things that I need to do more because Kawasaki Frontale was the opponent, but I think there are also things that I need to confirm within myself a little more. During the match, there were times when I was suddenly used as a full-back due to accidents, but I think it was the first time I started the match as a full-back. I thought it wouldn't go well and that it would burden the defense around me. I hope to practice and grow from there.

Q: How do you feel about the offensive part?
Unlike defense, I think there is no point in being on the pitch if I can't attack, so I think I have to do that.

Q, I think we will move forward with a good feeling and want to express our own football while achieving results.
A, as a fundamental idea, I think Tokyo chose this soccer to achieve results. Even if the results didn't come out, it's good because it's going well, I think it ends with this (opening game). From now on, it is necessary to not only play good soccer but also to focus on winning. Even if we play good soccer, it is meaningless to lose, so first of all, I think we should think about winning and not forget to show our own style for that.
