A battle to aim for victory as one unit towards breaking the losing streak

Sec. 10 of the league, we will play against Albirex Niigata away. In the 5/2 ACL Brisbane Roar match, we scored our first 4 goals of the season and secured our spot in Round 16. On the other hand, we are currently on a 3-game losing streak in the league. Unlike the ACL, we are facing analysis and countermeasures from the opponents, which makes it difficult for us to play our own style of soccer. However, we want to approach this match with the same speed and aggressive passing that we showed in the Brisbane match, without losing our attitude to challenge and stop the losing streak.

Niigata, the opponent, is currently in 16th place with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses. Although they are positioned in the lower ranks, in the previous match against Hiroshima, they seized victory by skillfully exploiting the opponent's weaknesses from a strong defense. They have conceded a total of 8 goals so far. On the other hand, they have scored a league-low of 5 goals, but they rely on their solid defense and counterattacks as their weapon. Gonda says, "Even if we are dominated by the opponent, we will accept it and patiently wait for an opportunity to strike. There is no hesitation in our approach."

Tokyo changes its lineup from the Brisbane match. In place of Hyun Soo JANG, Tokunaga enters and Mokuhara takes the right side, while Ota returns to the left side. Lucas is placed as the lone striker. The focus of the game will be on how to score, as Tokyo has been conceding goals recently and has only scored 1 goal in the last 3 consecutive losses, despite having control of the game.

The difficulty of the league match, as well as the injuries of Hirayama, Otake, and Tanabe, make it difficult to form the team, but above all, it is the J1 league with fierce competition. One situation, one game should determine the outcome. We aim for victory with perseverance and concentration, and we want to gain confidence by earning 3 points away from home. The match started at 19:04 with Niigata's kickoff at the Tokyo Denka Big Swan Stadium, where the rain had stopped but the chill remained.

Unable to create scoring opportunities to control the game, it remains scoreless in the second half.

Attacking aggressively from the start of the first half. In the 3rd minute, starting from Morishige, the ball was brought forward, and Takahashi connected Ota's left cross, and Kajiyama took a ground shot. However, it was off target. In the 11th minute, Lucas chased the opponent's defender and stole the ball on the right side, and passed it to Kajiyama near the goal. Although he was unable to shoot due to competition from the opponent's defender, Taniyama followed up on the loose ball and took a shot from the front. It was a decisive opportunity, but it was saved by the Niigata goalkeeper and resulted in a corner kick.

Niigata gradually begins to counterattack. In the 23rd minute, Niigata's left midfielder Tanaka dribbles and challenges Tokunaga with a foul-like tackle. The game continues without stopping, and a shot is taken from near the left area corner. It grazes the post and bounces back for a corner kick. In the 28th minute, the ball is dribbled into the center by FW Misheu and then passed to the left FW Bruno Lopez, but the cross goes beyond the line, and Niigata is saved by the opponent's mistake.

After that, they continued to create attacking opportunities, but they did not let Gunta concede a goal. In the 35th minute, Ota made a big side change from the left side to Kajiyama, and Taniyama broke through to the right area, but could not take a shot and only earned a right corner kick. Furthermore, they connected this corner kick with a short pass, and Hayashi in the near area entered a shooting position but was blocked. They spent most of the time in the opponent's half, but could not create clear scoring chances. Defensively, they remained focused and hardly gave the opponents any real chances as they entered the second half.

Kajiyama's opening goal was followed by Tanizawa's additional point, leading to a victory without conceding any points.

At half-time, Coach Popovic instructed us to "be more aware of shooting," and that paid off early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Lucas kept the ball after receiving a vertical pass from Tokunaga. He then made a quick cross to Mukuhara, who overlapped on the side. Kajiyama, in the center, volleyed the ball directly into the goal's left side net, giving us the lead despite the opposing defender's attempt to block. However, we later allowed Niigata to launch a counterattack.

Still, in the final scene, he firmly blocked with his body. Then, he began to grasp the flow again and turned to attack. In the 59th minute, Kajiyama received Takahashi's cross in front of the right area, controlled it, and boldly aimed for a middle shot with his right foot, grazing the defender and the post... only to earn a corner kick. In the 62nd minute, Ishikawa was substituted for Hayashi, aiming for an additional goal in a more offensive manner. In the 65th minute, Ota -> Ishikawa launched a speedy dribble from a counterattack on the front line, but the opponent's defender also returned and they couldn't make it to the shot.

Then in the 71st minute, a right throw-in in the opponent's half. From Mokuhara's long throw, Lucas in the right area competed with the opponent and the ball that spilled from the opponent's defender's feet was neatly slotted in by Tanizawa in the left area! They were able to snatch the additional goal they wanted. Even after that, they maintained a solid defensive posture without breaking their attacking stance. In the 86th minute, Kajiyama dropped the ball after jumping out from Tanizawa's left free kick, and Hasegawa immediately shot but missed the target. In the end, they secured a victory with a stable game play without conceding any goals, putting an end to their losing streak.

【Player Comment】《Kajiyama》"I think everyone had the desire to win and we were able to express that and fight. It was good that we were able to score 2 goals in the second half after enduring in the first half. (About the goal. Is it your first goal in the league?) I was free, so I was able to match Kelly's cross well. I've been playing together with Kelly for a long time, so I'm glad I could score from Kelly's ball... I tried to control it with the instep and aim for the opposite side, but it didn't hit well (laughs). But it rolled smoothly at a good angle, so maybe it was good in a different way..."

I play as an attacking midfielder, so I think I need to score more goals. The coach always tells me "Don't miss shooting opportunities", so I'm trying to approach practice with a higher awareness of shooting. But I also want to create more "our style". Today, I was able to create situations where I could move forward from passing exchanges with Lukon, but I want to increase those kinds of situations even more.

《Gonda》"In the league, we had lost three consecutive games, but since we had the ACL in between, the team atmosphere wasn't bad. In the Brisbane game, we took the initiative and launched flowing attacks, so personally, I wanted to carry that momentum in a positive direction for the league. I think today we were able to dominate the game and get results. It's the first time we've been able to control the game to this extent."

However, the opponent should come to study again after watching today's game. Especially against organized teams such as Sapporo, ACL Ulsan, and Tosu... Today, there is no guarantee that we can break the opponent just because we were able to break them today. In order to connect today's victory to the next one, I want to continue to grow one step further in practice. Right now, our record is just "50% win rate plus 1 win". I think we have to keep winning from here in order to truly compete for the top.

[Coach Popovich's full press conference] "I think we were able to play a smart and high-quality game today. And as this game has proven, I believe we have shown that we can dominate the game from start to finish, regardless of whether we are playing at home or away. Today, we were able to control the game, dominate it, and continue to attack, showing the attitude of going for goals. I think we were able to play in a way that deserves results. Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that we have a tough ACL match on Wednesday, so the fact that we were able to show consecutive high-quality games, including today's match, is something that can be further appreciated, and I would like to express my gratitude to the players who fought today."

The important thing is to continue this. What I would like you all to consider is not to judge based on results alone. When we were on a losing streak, there were many questions about the losses. I would like you to understand the game of football, think about the direction we are heading in, and what kind of team we will become in the future, and watch football with that perspective."

[Niigata Kurosaki Coach Press Conference Summary] "Today, in the middle of Golden Week, many supporters came to support us, so I am very frustrated with this result and feel sorry that my own abilities were not enough. In terms of game plan and style of play, we were able to create a solid block and launch quick attacks from counters in the first half. However, we conceded a goal during that time in the second half, which made it very difficult for us. Despite that, we tried to change the system and go for goals, but conceding the second goal was a big blow."

If we don't reduce mistakes in such situations, it will be difficult to win in the league. In the current situation, it is also difficult to score 2 or 3 goals. Even if we concede 1 goal, if we fight tenaciously and connect to an equalizer and then the next goal, I think there was a possibility. I think the second goal was a big turning point today."
